Ever feel like you are just going through the motions? Like nothing you do has meaning and you find yourself questioning…well…everything? Like you are burnt out, and all motivation has failed you?
In fact, I’ve been going through that feeling for a while now. You aren’t alone if you are going through it too. I found myself wondering if it was all worth it, maybe I should just give up. But I didn’t. Instead, I kept going, one day after the other, slogging through the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Along the way, I learned a few things that helped me get by, and eventually find spurts of motivation, and ultimately light at the end of the tunnel.
Nourish Your Soul
Take a time out from your business. Make time for something that matters to you. Something that makes you feel good, something that inspires you. Something that makes you feel whole. Maybe it’s the hobby you “don’t have time for” or connecting with family and friends, or attending a class, or even a mini
Nourish Your Body
One thing that has kept me going is physical fitness. 4 days a week I’m at the gym. It doesn’t matter how much I feel like I’m failing in other areas of my life, at the gym it’s just me and the heavy things I lift (and you know…other gym goers). My other life goals may not be making progress, but every day at the gym I can see the progress I am making on myself. It’s one thing I do for no other reason than for myself and my own satisfaction. It’s my time. Of course, physical fitness has its own benefits, such as improving mood, and the obvious health benefits. Those aches and pains from sitting at a desk all day? Thanks to the gym they’ve been greatly reduced, that alone is reason enough to get moving more.
Embrace the Journey
You have a goal. Goals don’t just happen, you have to work to get there. That’s the journey. Embrace it. Embrace the acts that you take to get where you want to be. Realize, that in the long run, the struggles you face now will just be part of the road you take to reach your end goals. They are steps along the way, they will not last forever. While you are on this journey, pull over for a moment and make sure you are on the right track. Do the steps you take now really matter in the end? Are they helping you get where you need to be? Or do you need to make a U-turn and head on a different path? It’s okay to realize you need to change directions. Sometimes you get lost. Sometimes, you realize that your destination isn’t where you really want to go.
Seek Motivation From Others
Seek out your favorite inspiring people. Listen or read their words. Be inspired by their journeys, their words. Talk to your business friends or mastermind groups. Get input and support from them. It might be your journey, but that doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Let others help you carry your burdens, let them guide you with their own experiences and wisdom.

It’s amazing what a little rest can do! If you are tired, you can rest. Take a time out from your business. Take a weekend, or even a whole week or longer. Let it go from your mind, and come back to it with a new, refreshed perspective. Accept that you cannot do what you want to do right now. It’s okay! Rest if you need to. Gather your strength back, and return to work with a new perspective and energy.
Habits & Dedication > Motivation
There’s something I learned from my regular visits to the gym. Motivation fades, but habits and dedication remain. Can you believe I’ve been logging every single meal for over a year? Over 400 days?! It’s not because I’m motivated to, it’s because it’s a habit. Eat food, log food. It’s the same with everything else in life. Motivation may get you started, but dedication and the habits you build keep you going, whether that’s in business or fitness. So keep going, keep working through the hard times. Make habits that will help you get through the times when motivation fails when you feel like all you can do is put one step in front of another. Those steps, no matter how small, eventually get you to where you want to be.
The next time you feel yourself running on empty when you think you cannot possibly go on, stop. Take a break, remember these tips and take the time to recharge yourself, then get back to it. Above all, remember you aren’t alone in this.
