You’re busy. The last thing you have time to do is make sure your WordPress website is up to date, there are just more pressing priorities! What’s the worst that could happen if you just ignore your website’s maintenance? I’m sure it would be totally fine…nothing bad will happen, right?
1 | The SLOOOOOW DOWN
Over time your website can slow down. You add new content, and comments (don’t forget all those spam comments) which takes up space on your website. This can cause your site to slow down. Your WordPress installation, theme, and plugins updates also can address issues by optimizing files sizes and other tweaks to improve performance. The optimizations help your site to run more quickly and prevent slowdowns or fix existing known issues that are slowing down your site.
2 | It’s Insecure
This is the biggest reason you should keep your WordPress website up to date: security. Old, outdated plugins, themes, and WordPress core files are filled with known vulnerabilities which hackers can use to hack your site or infect it with malware. This is a threat to you, and anyone who visits your site. Updates frequently are created just to deal with known vulnerabilities and prevent nefarious individuals from using them to harm your site.
3 | Out of Date Content
Oh, you moved your physical office location? Phone number changed? Got a new contact email address? Changed your prices or policies? Good site maintenance also includes updating your website’s content. It could be as simple as updating a phone number or editing your pricing, or maybe it’s addressing recent developments or changes related to a blog post you wrote about. Your website might be your client’s only interaction with you, so you need to make sure it’s up to date to avoid confusion and give them reliable information.
4 | If it’s Gone it’s Gone
Backing up your website is a very important part of your website’s maintenance. Things happen, sometimes there are technical issues, or sometimes you get hacked, or that one little tweak you made to your site actually broke it all, whatever the reason for your sudden loss of website the best solution is to have a recent backup. Backups help you quickly and easily recover from issues with minimal downtime and pain. Don’t ignore your site’s backups until the worst happens and you are left hoping your host has a decently recent backup of your site! Make it part of your regular maintenance to protect your website.
5 | Poor User Experience
Your visitors are important! They are potential clients, and you want to give them the best experience possible on your website. As mentioned in numbers 1,2, and 3, a neglected site can be prone to some things that are pretty bad for user experience: slow site load times, malware, and out of date content. Show your visitors your best side by ensuring your site is well taken care of, so they will stay and enjoy your content.
Performing regular maintenance on your WordPress website is essential to keep it running well. Monthly maintenance doesn’t have to be hard! Here’s my advice to help you easily keep your site running smoothly.
How to Keep Your WordPress Website Up to Date with Simple Monthly Maintenance in 3 Simple Steps
- Install & activate the Updraft Plus plugin.
Set up the plugin’s backup schedule to suit your needs. The more frequently you update your site, the more frequently the backups should run. At the minimum, it should run once every month.
On the First of the Month, or any other day you will remember, update your plugins, themes, and core WordPress files. Before you do so, backup your site. To make this easier update your plugins and such on a day you have scheduled Updraft Plus to backup your site. If you don’t have a recent backup, create a new backup file using Updraft Plus, then proceed to run all updates. This is also a good time to give your site a quick look to make sure all content is correct, links work, and all content or features work.
